This can of cream of mushroom soup was $0.55 at Aldi. It is really cheap, has a long shelf life, and is versatile. It is a wonderful item to keep in the pantry.
However, there is an extremely high amount of sodium in this soup. The recommended daily sodium intake is 2,300 mg (CDC, 2017). This has over a third of the daily recommended sodium intake and that is if only the serving size was consumed. The average adult woman should consume 1,600 to 2,400 calories per day and 2,000 to 3,000 calories for men ("Appendix 2," 2015). This soup is low in calories, so it would be unlikely that this is the only thing eaten for a meal. There is potential for additional sodium consumption within one meal. |
This bag of 8 frozen bean and cheese burritos costs $3.05 at Aldi. Once again, this is a versatile item, it has a long shelf life, and it was relatively cheap. This could provide two dinners for my family or a snack. These burritos have a very long ingredient list. They are lower in sodium, fat, and sugar. However, they are rather small, and low in calories so one is not a meal. It would need to be accompanied by something else, and that could add extra fat, sodium, or sugars. |
